Local musicians Mitch Cheney and Alan Mills (guitars), Andy Calvert (bass), and Kevin Kelley (drums) have formed a post/math rock band called TARIFFS. This blend of post-rock and math rock combines two experimental genres. Post-rock builds emotional soundscapes through crescendos and layered textures, while math rock adds complex rhythms, odd time signatures, and intricate guitar work. Both emphasize texture, dynamics, and atmosphere over traditional musical structures. The songs are often instrumental, or the vocals may be spoken word, or change from one performance to another. TARIFFS showcase technical proficiency, while exuding raw emotion. Fellow local musicians have described the band as "instrumentally operatic, yet crushing.” Members of TARIFFS have performed in Sweep The Leg Johnny, Terror Management Band, Rumah Sakit, South Paw, and the Wobbly Toms, to name a few.
